Artist Statement

Katie Soo's art practice is an exploration of ephemeral connections, where materials and emotions intertwine to evoke the fragility and strength of human experiences. In her ceramic vessels, Soo employs a meticulous stamping and inlaying technique with contrasting clays, a process requiring deep mindfulness and patience.

Her sculptural work extends this narrative through abstract forms, where welded metal frameworks serve as the bones of her pieces. Suspended from these are hundreds of ceramic fragments, each a bearer of individual stories, collectively forming a dynamic interplay between interiority and exposure. This structure invites viewers to navigate the duality of concealment and revelation, reflecting on the layers of personal and collective experiences that shape our perceptions.

Drawing inspiration from the natural world, Soo's use of organic forms and elements in both metal and ceramics emphasizes the inherent connection between human experience and the environment. Her sculptures and vessels do not merely occupy space; they interact with their surroundings and viewers, offering a meditative exploration of texture, shadow, and form. Through her work, Soo seeks to illuminate the profound ties that link our inner landscapes to the tangible world, crafting a visual language that resonates with the shared essence of nature and emotion.
